Adventure Island (3DS): COMPLETED!

This was up on the 3DS VC this week. I wasn’t going to get it, as I had other things to be playing, but when I hopped on to the eShop to see what else was newly available, I suddenly got the urge to play it. An hour and a half later, I’d finished it. I actually really enjoyed it. Sure, it’s a bit simple. Yes, it’s pretty easy (especially the bosses – if you’ve got a dinosaur to ride …

Adventure Island: The Beginning (Wii): COMPLETED!

I know I was saying how hard this was, but in fact, it got easier as it went along. This was mainly due to being able to buy new moves and upgraded weapons; the double-jump and flying jump combined made some bits of the later levels very, very easy. I’m also convinced the end of game boss was easier than the second boss too. Once I’d figured out his pattern, anyway. After completing the game, you get another marker on …

Adventure Island: The Beginning (Wii)

Whilst having another loads-of-points-in-my-account-but-I-am-weak moment, I bought this from the Wii Ware shop in the week. I’m not impressed with the quality of the presentation, to be honest. The graphics are a bit shoddy, in that 2.5D way games sometimes are, and the screen fonts look like they’re poorly scaled, and it’s not in widescreen. However, it plays like a great platformer from days gone by. It’s hard (I’m at World 2-2 and it’s difficult already), but that’s good – …

Return to Monkey Island (Switch): COMPLETED!

It’s another one of those “why did it take me so long to get round to it” games. Well, to answer that, just take a look around the rest of my site. But here I am, having eventually played and completed it. There was much kerfuffle about the change in graphic style between this and the original (and the remasters of those, and the Telltale Games ones) as if the pixels of the first two games were sacred and should …

Dizzy the Adventurer (Evercade): COMPLETED!

I’d never played this Dizzy game before, although many parts of it seemed familiar. Was is a retitled reworking of another one, perhaps? It was much, much easier than Treasure Island Dizzy, not least because it looks like the only way you can die is by falling in water, and I only did that once. There’s a bit of an anticlimax at the end too when you don’t get to fight Zaks like I was sure you would (and I …

Yoku’s Island Express (Switch): COMPLETED!

This game is, now bear with me, a pinball metroidvania adventure game set on an island where you’re an ant who also happens to be the new postman, and you collect fruit whilst taped to a ball. As soon as you arrive on the island, the god creature that oversees it is attacked and it’s up to you to find all the tribal elders who together can heal the god. Oh yes, and you’re armed with a party horn, and …

Sonic Rush Adventure (DS)

Bumped into Johnny The Torpedo Shark Robot Thing first of all, but couldn’t beat him. He gets far too far ahead right away, so launching stuff at him doesn’t work (they don’t hit him), and I can’t boost to catch up as he’s too fast. So I gave up on him. Instead, I explored another couple of islands, and then stumbled across Sky Babylon, which was actually pretty difficult with lots of electro-floor insta-deaths and precision jumping. I found a …

Sonic Rush Adventure (DS)

Didn’t play for long as my battery started to go flat. Did find a few more islands, and redid an earlier one to get some more Bronze Material so I could build a hovercraft. Well, so Tails could build it, but anyway. With that, I found a couple more islands, and can see where I need to go next but didn’t actually attempt to get there due to the battery thing – you don’t want to be losing your game …

Sonic Rush Adventure (DS)

After complaining about the backtracking and repeating levels thing on this game in ugvm, I got a reply saying that you don’t need to redo levels so much, if you explore the map and find hidden islands, and do those instead. So, armed with that advice, I set about finding hidden islands, which did indeed provide a larger quantity of Material needed to build things (in this case, a radio tower) than the proper “story” levels. I had to redo …

Sonic Rush Adventure (DS)

I have come across a major, irritating, and almost game-breaking problem with this game today. I couldn’t progress yesterday as I needed to build a new boat. But I couldn’t build a new boat as I didn’t have enough of the required Material. The solution? Play levels I’d already played before. Again. And again. Until I’d collected enough to carry on. How annoying! Then I had to race a shark on sea bikes, and got a Chaos Emerald for my …

Super Monkey Ball Adventure (GC)

Ooook mook monkey ook eek mook ook EEK! Ook oooook monkey ei! ei! Oooook ei mook! EEK! Oook monkey ei ei monkey monkey oook! Ei! EEK! Mook oook monkey ook! And so on. That’s all the dialogue in the game. It is driving me mental. Also driving me mental is the camera. And the fact that the game just isn’t really all that great. And that I’m stuck – that doesn’t actually help. I’m still on Jungle Island. I can’t …

Super Monkey Ball Adventure (GC)

It’s Super Monkey Ball, Jim, but not as we know it… It’s very odd. Very very odd. Firstly, there’s an issue with the camera – I want to invert the X axis, but I can’t seem to do that. Then there’s the way the entire world tilts when you move. Yeah – that’s how it worked before on the other games, but now you have an entire actual island that moves, and it’s very jarring. Anyway. I rounded up some …
